Oscar Selfie breaks Twitter records

We’ve all seen it—Ellen, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt and more packed into one superstar selfie, but did you realize that the Famous Oscar Selfie was nothing more than an $18 million Samsung phone product placement?

The world renowned and much retweeted selfie featuring Ellen DeGeneres, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and Kevin Spacey was “spontaneously” taken during the Oscar Awards Show on March 2, 2014. It was no surprise that this was buzzing worldwide the day after the show. But was this selfie as impulsive as it seemed?

“It’s such a disappointment that this selfie was planned. It seemed so real and spontaneous, but after all, I guess they are all actors and actresses at the Oscars,” said senior Erika Greco.

Junior Rachel Eisenhour bluntly stated, “What? Fun selfies shouldn’t be planned like that…fake fun equals fake people.”

The picture was taken by Bradley Cooper using the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Samsung is one of the Oscar’s biggest advertisers and has spent over $24 million on Oscar advertising since 2009.

The world-famous selfie was rehearsed several times before the actual picture was taken and tweeted.

DeGeneres broke the record for Twitter retweets when she posted the picture with her fellow stars. The record is currently 3,387,002 retweets and still climbing. This record doesn’t seem like it will be topped anytime soon.

This will definitely go down in Twitter history.
