Documenting the rise of an empire: technology

By Simone Stephens

It’s the twenty-first century and the rise of technology has gradually taken over. Everywhere you turn there is some way to be in contact with technology, whether someone iswalking down the street looking down at their phone or a group of friends at lunch is taking selfies to post to Instagram.

Today’s youth, especially, has been consumed by the new evil technology brings. Because of this evil, technology consumes society’schildren, even adults. It disturbs proper development in children, making learning difficult. All people are less and less inclined to communicate with each other face to face. Though there are some benefits to the electronics, it seems that society has an overall addiction to them.

According to changelearning.com, this new generation of digital natives has had such a different range of experiences during key developmental phases that they actually think and process information differentlythan those of previous generations. This makes the learning process difficult for students. This is because this generation has developed “hypertext” minds, meaning that their thought processes leap around.

Changelearning.com goes further to state that current teaching methods, lectures, and typical step-by-step instructions do little to engage students. The technology that students use outside of the classroom interests them far more, leading to a dull-minded generation. If technology has such a profound impact on the youth in this negative manner, what else could it possibly do to the world in the near future?

The world has become addicted to their phones. People, young and old, are always trying to keep up with the latest trends on Twitter, Facebook and post every life moment on Instagram. Thenextweb.com claims that technology has become our closest friend. Technology has become the person for whom we will do anything, drop everything for, and even break away from an important conversation. This sounds a lot like today’s society.

Although there are a lot of negative things that can be said about technology, there is also some positivity. Technology allows people to connect with friends around the country or even the world. There are apps like Skype, Oovoo, and Tango that allow users to video chat with friends and family, anytime and anywhere. Other apps have been createdto help people become more active, organized, and informed.Nowadays there is literally an app for EVERYTHING.

Technology definitely has its ups and downs. It has taken over at such a rapid pace that it will be interesting to see what the future will hold for our society and its undeniable love for technology. Who knows? Robots just might be in the world’s horizon!
