Bordercross: the secret sport

As the temperature starts to drop and the snow starts to fall, students from all three Walled Lake high schools come together as a team to compete and shred the slopes. This team is known as Boardercross.

Every season is hosted at Alpine Valley located in White Lake. The team practices every Tuesday and Thursday from roughly 6-8 pm. Senior Maxwell Sharfman said, “At practice we run through races and talk about tactics that will improve personal times then apply those tactics.”

In order to participate with the team for one season, it will cost a player about $900.00. Each snowboarder needs a season pass for Alpine Valley, which costs $450.00, the pay to play is $450.00, and slope rent is a one time payment of $200.00. “The costs are extreme but being able to go everyday and compete with teammates from other schools pays off the price,” said senior Marie Langmeyer.

Boardercross is not like any other sport, each snowboarder has to compete to qualify for states where they race individually for their own place. The season started Thursday, January 12.
