Phil sees his shadow so plan for 6 more weeks of winter

By Nick M

Spring is going to have to wait because we have another six weeks of winter ahead of us. Thursday January 2 at around 7:25 am, Phil the groundhog made his decision and we will have a longer winter in 2017.

“Since it’s been warmer than usual lately, I don’t think the next six weeks will be brutal,” said junior Troy Taliaferro.

In Punxsutawney, PA, their now world-famous groundhog Phil is the chosen groundhog representative and always gives his annual “forecast” on the top of a tiny hill in the town called Gobbler’s Knob. Some may say it’s the spot lights that throw him off since the sun isn’t fully arisen at 7:25 am in Punxsutawney.

Still, people are going to believe Phil and he predicts another six weeks of winter. “I’m not looking forward to the cold weather since we just had that warm break a couple weeks ago,” said sophomore Sarah Abrams.

Groundhog Day works like this, if the weather is cloudy and Phil doesn’t see his shadow it means there’s an early spring. If it’s sunny and Phil sees his shadow, then there will be six more weeks of winter.
“I just bought a new snowblower and it’s like giving a kid a brand new toy, I don’t mind another six weeks,” said community member Phillip Hoyt.
