You may have noticed a few additional bald heads around school recently. Those are the varsity hockey players who shaved their heads in advance of their first scrimmage of the season, a 1-1 tie against Northville on Thursday, November 14.
The first league game of the season was a win against Canton by 2-1 on Wednesday, November 13 at Farmington Hills Ice Arena. The next game will be on Wednesday, November 20 at 7pm against West Bloomfield.
The team has been working up to these first few games. They practice every day after school from 3-4:30pm at Suburban Ice Arena in Farmington. “We practice about an hour and a half on the ice and then an hour off the ice,” sophomore Ryan Kalis said.
As for the bald heads, the team has the tradition every year to shave the first year players’ heads. The team did this in recognition that team pictures are coming up.
“We do it at a teammate’s house; it’s a lot of fun,” stated first year varsity player senior Carter Mayes. “I got to shave a few heads myself which was pretty cool.”
Most of the guys on the team did end up shaving their heads. When the players heard they had to shave them, at first they were some that were not eager. Most of the guys could be seen the day after the shaving at school with hats on.
“I think only one person didn’t shave their head,” said first year varsity player Kalis. “It’s a lot easier to tell this year because there are more of us this year, there weren’t that many last year.”
