Model United Nations is a club that brings students together to discuss world issues and how to solve them. It is advised by Social Studies teacher Mark Willard and led by student president Shawn Hikosaka, senior. This weekend, the club is going to the Canadian-American Security Council’s event which is a Model UN conference at the Lansing Radisson hotel. It will be held all day Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3. Here, members of different Model UN clubs from around the state will be able to collaborate on their ideas.
Leadership for this club is crucial because when traveling to conferences, each club needs someone to represent their group. Being club president is an important role that takes a lot of leadership and responsibility. “I wanted to be Model UN president because it runs parallel with my interest in international politics, which is a major I want to pursue in college,” said Hikosaka.
Just as important as the president, are the other member of the club. Preparing for this conference individually will be crucial for the success of the whole group. “I have had to do a lot of research because it is important to understand your country’s foreign policy to be prepared for the conference,” said sophomore member Eric Siegrist.
This conference is going to be a great opportunity for the club, not only to learn, but to have fun. “I am excited to get to work with people from all around the state and look for solutions to real problems that are affecting the world right now. Although the public speaking is a little nerve racking, it should be a lot of fun,” said sophomore member Kyle Biel.
