Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them review by Patrice

When Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 came out five years ago, that seemed like the end of the Wizarding World. So when fans heard that a new story set in the Harry Potter universe was going to be released they were ecstatic.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a new original screenplay written by Potter author J.K Rowling and takes place 70 years before Harry and his friends fought Voldemort in New York City. Instead of the Boy Who Lived, our main character is a magic-zoologist named Newt Scamander, played by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne, who travels to New York with a suitcase full of magical creatures. However, some of the creatures get out and cause trouble. Mayhem in the city and rumors of a powerful dark wizard make it even harder for Newt, his friends, and his creatures.

Some of the magical team behind the Potter films are back again for Fantastic Beasts, including director David Yates and composer James Newton Howard. Along with J.K Rowling as producer and writer, this film immediately transfers fans back to the Wizarding world and makes them feel as though they never left. The cast is also incredible with Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, and Dan Folger as lead characters.

This film is a more adult entry into the world of magic, with more action and darker content, but it still makes sure to keep a light-hearted feel and adds in some comedic parts. The creatures in the movie look incredible, as a mix of puppetry and CGI gives them a life-like appearance. The setting of 1920s New York gives a refreshing new look on the complex world Rowling created, showing the politics and government workings of American wizards, even mention of an American wizarding school.

If you some how missed the Potter craze, you can still enjoy this film as it’s a completely new story with new characters and it makes sure to explain the world just enough for you to want to learn more. Overall, this movie was amazing and very magical. It’s a wonderful introduction into a new era of the Wizarding world and a new movie franchise, with a total of five films. The second movie is set to come out in 2018.
